The Hoka Mafate 5 is a trail running shoe designed for demanding use: technical terrain, long distances, and maximum protection. It's intended for runners who need durability, generous cushioning, and good traction on hard, rocky, muddy, or mixed surfaces.

It's ideal for ultramarathons, medium- to long-distance trail races, extended training runs on technical terrain, or for anyone looking for a shoe that can withstand many hours of wear on varied surfaces. It's not so much for pure speed; it works best if you prioritize comfort and support over pace.

The upper combines a warp-knit mesh with an anti-abrasion treatment and a 360-degree molded TPU cage that provides structure and protection against rocks, branches, and other trail obstacles. A dynamic vamp with some stretch in the toe area has been added to adapt to uneven terrain, the heel and collar are padded, and there are attachment points for optional gaiters to keep out debris.

The midsole utilizes a dual-density system: a firmer layer of supercritical EVA foam (SCF EVA) directly underfoot for responsiveness, and a softer layer of EVA (CMEVA) underneath for shock absorption. The new Rocker Integrity Technology is incorporated—a lightweight, curved TPU plate positioned between these layers, designed to maintain the rocker geometry over many kilometers, promoting efficient toe-off even on uneven terrain. MetaRocker geometry is also used to smooth heel-to-toe transitions.

The sole features Vibram Megagrip rubber with traction lugs approximately 5 mm deep. This lug pattern is aggressive enough to grip mud, loose rock, and roots, but not so aggressive as to be uncomfortable on less technical sections. The sole design offers good coverage, which improves durability in high-wear areas.
