Why racing shoes?
If you need to gain time in your competitions, these types of shoes are ideal, as they are designed with speed in mind, are very light, and usually have less cushioning than standard shoes. The weight of these types of shoes is one of the most important characteristics. They usually weigh around 250 grams. The last is usually narrow and the insoles are lightweight. Another common characteristic of competition shoes is the drop, which is usually somewhat lower.
Competition shoes are recommended primarily for light runners, especially for 5-10 km races. Runners capable of running under 3:30 min/km can wear them for a half marathon or marathon. These shoes last 400-600 km.
What should we keep in mind when choosing running shoes?
First of all, we must take into account the type of stride we have, that is, if we are pronator (the ankle tilts inward when you step), supinator (the ankle tilts outward) or neutral (the ankle remains in an almost vertical position).
Secondly, we need to choose the type of cushioning we need. If we're going to use the shoes for training, it's best to choose more cushioning. On the other hand, racing shoes usually have less cushioning.
We should also consider the drop (the difference in height between the heel and the toe). The drop is usually around 10-12 mm, although some types of shoes have a drop between 4-6 mm and can even have a zero drop. Racing shoes, as we've already mentioned, usually have a low drop. A high drop favors landing on the heel (recommended for beginners or people who tend to heel strike excessively), while shoes with a low drop are indicated for runners who land on the midfoot or the toe.
Another feature to keep in mind is that the upper (top part of the shoe) is made of quality, soft, padded materials with as few seams as possible.
As for size, it's advisable to choose shoes that are slightly larger, preferably half a size larger, since when we run, our feet expand and swell, which can cause discomfort and even injury.
In short, we should choose the shoes we feel most comfortable in, always keeping in mind the use we will give them and our characteristics.
